What is a BMI Calculator?
A BMI Calculator computes your Body Mass Index — a widely used screening measure based on your weight and height. Developed by Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s, the formula BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)² provides a quick estimate of body fat levels for most adults.
How to Use This BMI Calculator
- Choose your preferred unit system — Metric (kg/cm) or Imperial (lbs/ft-in).
- Enter your weight and height in the fields above.
- Optionally add your age and gender for contextual health insights.
- Click Calculate BMI to see your score, visual gauge, healthy weight range, and detailed category breakdown.
Understanding BMI Categories (WHO Classification)
- Severe Underweight: BMI below 16.0 — May indicate malnutrition or an underlying health condition.
- Underweight: BMI 16.0 – 18.4 — Below the healthy range, may need nutritional support.
- Normal Weight: BMI 18.5 – 24.9 — Associated with the lowest health risks.
- Overweight: BMI 25.0 – 29.9 — Increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Obese Class I: BMI 30.0 – 34.9 — Moderate health risk.
- Obese Class II: BMI 35.0 – 39.9 — Severe health risk.
- Obese Class III: BMI 40.0+ — Very severe health risk.
What is BMI Prime?
BMI Prime is the ratio of your BMI to the upper limit of normal BMI (25). A value of 1.0 means you are at the upper boundary of normal weight. Values below 1.0 indicate underweight or normal weight, while values above 1.0 indicate overweight or obesity.
Limitations of BMI
BMI does not differentiate between muscle mass and fat mass. Athletes with high muscle density may be classified as overweight despite having low body fat. BMI also does not account for fat distribution — central adiposity (belly fat) carries higher health risks than peripheral fat. For a more complete health assessment, consider combining BMI with waist circumference, body fat percentage, and consultation with a healthcare professional.
